Choosing your leopard gecko - Part 2

It is a MUST! when deciding on buying a gecko that it is a captive bred even though it may be more epxensive in the stores than a wild bred one. You see if it is wild bred it is more likely to have a disease or parasites and one trip to the vets takes all that money you saved on buying a wild bred gecko rather than buying a captive bred one.

Also one thing to check for when buying your gecko is count the toes as they can loose some of their five during shedding of the skin. This will probably not affect your gecko too much, but you can ask for a discount if you notice it!

One other thing you should look at are the geckos eyes as they should be bright and fully open otherwise this can mean they have lack of basic health.

Always be sure that the salesman/woman has a good knowledge of geckos, otherwise it could mean the geckos are kept in awful conditions.

Ask the vendor if you can handle the gecko just to get a feel of him. Also ask if you can see it being fed to see whether it eats well. It might already have been fed so if it doesn’t eat it doesn’t always mean there’s a problem. Just be aware of the possibility.

Don’t forget to check the general living conditions for the gecko in the store, to make sure it looks clean and fit for it to live in. You don’t want a gecko that is deprived of nearly everything!

One last thing I should mention is that young geckos are striped rather than spotty all over.
